Shades of gray - Jacadi's fall collection
I will be honest, I don't tend to think of Jacadi as my first back-to-school shopping destination. The name has become synonymous with gorgeous French baby and kids clothing--but also with expensive French baby and kids clothing.

However when I took a look at their fall offerings this year all inspired by back to school in Paris (uh, yeah. Those Parisian kids must be super well-dressed.)  I was surprised to find it wasn't all about $600 cashmere baby booties after all.

While this is still very much a luxury brand, there are a few purchases that I could justify for special occasions. The girls' les bords de Seine collection is probably my favorite overall, featuring traditional French schoolgirl styles in elegant shades of gray. The bow applique boat neck tee is a little splurgey at $44 but not outrageous, and I love the trapeze dress with shiny red mary-janes for holidays.

If there's any splurge I can justify every fall though, it's a fabulous coat, since I know how much use my kids'll get out of it.)That A-line girls wool coat (above) is calling my name; I'd buy it a size big for my older daughter, then pass it down it until the sleeves came up to my younger daughter's elbows.

For boys there are so many great parkas and wool jackets. I think the quilted vest (right) is ridiculously cute with the brown cord trim.

I also like the boys dress shirts with a mandarin collar which feels fresher (and less restrictive) than a traditional one. At $60 it's comparable with the department store labels, and the quality is exquisite.

So is Jacadi still a splurge? Unless you get paid in Yen, indeed. But if you find one piece you love (again, may I suggest the outerwear?) and mix it in with the super steals your bargain-hunting eagle-eyes spot all year, your kid will be the chicest a l'ecole toute l'année. -Liz
