The history of Black Americans is filled with stories of inspiration and strength, so in honor of Black History Month, I was so happy to find artwork inspired by one of my favorite poets, Maya Angelou. Each piece features quotes that have been turned into artwork and speak of that resilience, hope, and courage. I also love how universal they are in their messaging, and how her beautiful words speak to all kinds of people. Wise words for us all.
Etsy's Finding Sunshine Rae creates typographical prints on photo paper (at top) which feature a mix of lettering and colors to spell out important food for thought for kids. Or for anyone, really. I'd love to look up from my desk to see art like this, any day.
Hand drawn and cut by the printmakers at Raw Art Letterpress, the Maya Angelou print shown above from her poem On The Pulse of Morning is such a positive message for kids to see as they start each new day. If they are older, share the entire poem with them. It is stunning.
Oh, how I love this quote from Maya Angelou, interpreted by Jennifer Zetts at The Little Illustrator. It's a message I'd particularly love for my quirky tween daughters, though there is also a version for our quirky boys too. And, she is open to custom work, so if you'd prefer a child of color in the illustration, just send her a note.
While this gorgeous illustration from artist Lisa Congdon isn't available as a print to hang in a room, we love the Tumblr blog on which it is featured so much. Check out the story of Maya Angelou on The Reconstructionists, a collaborative website between Lisa and Maria Popova of Brainpickings to honor incredible women. You'll also find pieces on other important African American women like Rosa Parks, Billie Holiday, and Odetta Holmes. Each one will make for a timely, important read during this Black History Month--and maybe even an inspiring wallpaper for your own desktop or phone if you download the image.
