The 20 most affordable family travel destinations right now, in the US and internationally
As you may know, one of our top tips for affordable family travel, especially on an extended trip, is to rent an apartment or home instead of forking out big bucks for a hotel -- let alone renting two hotel rooms, if you've got a bigger family. Linda even shared that very tip in her recent article about traveling to Barcelona with teens, as did Kristen in her article about a traveling to Iceland with kids. Hey, we like saving money! So we're happy to get a hold of this list just released by VRBO, detailing the most affordable domestic and international travel destinations, based on the average price per night from all of their home rental listings. Best of all, they're all under $250 a night, with the international destinations each under $200!

The most affordable travel destinations for families: Domestic

10. Berlin, Germany ($200) 9. Prague, Czech Republic ($195) 8. Halifax, Canada ($194) 7. Madrid, Spain ($187) 6. Seville, Spain ($187) 5. Lisbon, Portugal ($185) 4. Carolina, Puerto Rico ($183)* 3. Tokyo, Japan ($181) 2. Calgary, Canada ($171) 1. Porto, Portugal ($154) *To clarify: While Puerto Rico is in the Caribbean, it's part of the United States. That would actually make it the second most affordable US vacation spot. How great is that?    Now obviously this list doesn't take into account expenses like airfare (hey, Tokyo) and food -- but maybe you have some frequent flyer miles saved up? Also, presumably other vacation rental services, like Airbnb and Homeaway would be comparable -- with the exception of luxury-only home rental services like Time and Place. But wherever you stay, I think it's worth adding these destinations to your list of potential family destinations to look into, because, great prices! I mean, Madrid? Prague? Porto? Awesome. Though if I can put in a plug for Puerto Rico right now -- it's gorgeous, it's passport-free, it's a particularly easy flight from the east coast, and they could really use the tourist dollars right now.
