If the name Chanel Miller sounds familiar, her name became known to the world several years ago after revealing that she was the anonymous "Stanford University victim" in the high-publicity rape case against Brock Turner in 2015. Since going public with her story, she's gone on to write the extraordinary 2020 memoir called Know My Name, and has become a respected voice in the essential discussion around sexual assault on college campus.
The Ryka collaboration is clearly personal to Chanel; each shoe repeats the word "courage" in her own handwriting, along with one of her trademark "doodles" -- a lion -- which I think is such a great mantra and reminder for all women about our power and our capacity for bravery.
As Chanel describes her ambition with the design, "even if there's chaos in your mind, you can take a moment to feel solid wherever you're standing."
I'm also grateful that $25,000 of the profits from this shoe will go toward the nonprofit Futures Without Violence, to advance their work to end domestic assault and sexual violence.
